Tahbilk 'Eric Stevens Purbrick' Shiraz 2016
Wines taste best when shared with friends!
For mine the most important winery in Victoria, if not the country. Why? An wonderfully historical winery (in immaculate condition) with an incredibly long track record of high quality Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Marsanne. Indeed Tahbilk was soley responsible for putting Marsanne on the Australian winedrinker's map and it also happens to be the custodian of the oldest Marsanne vines on earth.
The estate also possesses Victoria's most historical shiraz plantings (the 1860's block). Whilst Shiraz and Marsanne get most of the attention I think the Cabernet-based wines lead the way. Recent tastings of the 1972, 1984 and 1991 confirm the well-deserved track record of cellaring capability.
Newer releases such as the 'Old Block' series have also been very impressive.
"While the sweet, cedary oak needs more time to settle, there's a gloss to this. Ripe fruit, woodsy spices and eucalypt to the fore. It's full of flavour and rich, but is not a humongous wine.
