Stephen Pannell has twice won Australia’s most prestigious wine award, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy – most recently in 2014 for his 2013 Adelaide Hills Syrah – and his reputation is further hinted at by his being named one of the 50 most influential contributors to the world of wine by Decanter Magazine.

In 2014, Steve won his second Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy & further cemented his relationship with the great grapegrowing region that is South Australia by setting up a cellar door in the heart of McLaren Vale. His local legend status has been confirmed again and again, winning the Bushing Trophy for best red wine of show in McLaren Vale no less than four times: 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

The grapes grow on two blocks of low-yielding, unirrigated Shiraz planted in the early 1990s by the previous custodians, Don and Jill Cant. The Hardy block has a southerly aspect, and the Bore Hole block faces East. Nursed and nurtured since purchase in 2014, these blocks are finally ready to produce a Koomilya Estate Shiraz.

"Very deep, dark colour with a good rim of purple; the bouquet is all about broken rock, ferrous earth, dried blood, brown spices and dark fruits at the back. This is full of mysterious complexity, the palate full bodied and deep, with profound flavour backed by masses of supple black-tea tannins and the length is prodigious. A smashing shiraz in an earthy/mineral style at a far remove from 'fruity' wine." 96pts | Huon Hooke | The Real Review Feb 2026
