In addition to its predominant source—a parcel of old vines in Meruzzano—Rocca’s Barbaresco now takes in a selection of young-vine fruit from Albino Rocca Barbaresco Crus, including Cottà and Ronchi. Meruzzano is a very diverse, cool place, with lots of forest, perfect for warmer vintages. These excellent sources, and the meticulous winemaking—three weeks on skins and maturation exclusively in large, low-impact oak botti for 20 months—consistently results in a benchmark wine for this level.

This is a lovely, delicate style, even though it’s coming from a dry, warm vintage. Only 400 mm of rain (about half the norm) fell in 2022, and there was a very long, warm summer; the vintage was completed by September 29, so early for the region. It’s a year that we can compare with 2017 in terms of the weather, yet the wines here are completely different. This is very perfumed, pretty, floral, and must be tasted (and drunk!). The notes below sum it up well.

“A floral style, showing roses and violets at the forefront as well as pomegranate and a slightly peppery character. Medium-bodied, it shows fierce, fresh structure with chewy tannins and a spicy finish. Focused on youthfulness.” 92pts | Aldo Fiordelli |  jamessuckling.com
