What can we say about Henschke that hasn't already been said? Australian's greatest family winery, the greatest producer of Eden Valley wines, entrenched as one of the greatest Adelaide Hills makers & of course the maker and custodian of Australian's greatest wine and vineyard - Hill of Grace Shiraz.
"Henschke is the foremost medium-sized wine producer in Australia. Stephen and Prue Henschke have taken a crown jewel and polished it to an even greater brilliance. In this 2021 edition of the Wine Companion, it has a staggering six wines with 97-99 points, and a further 13 with 95-96 points. Year on year they have quietly added labels for single vineyards, single varieties or blends. Recognition as Winery of the Year is arguably long overdue." Halliday Winery of the Year 2021
"Shiraz Cabernet with a 2% splash of Cabernet Franc, Euphonium is a well composed example of the classic Aussie red. Offers a nice mix of Shiraz-lead ripe plums and blackberries married to Cabernet’s cassis, herbs and leaves and tied in unison by woody spices, red earth notes, dried flowers and cocoa. Maybe there is less savouriness this vintage compared to previous years; the ’23 seems more fruit-filled and buoyant in mood. Definitely energised as a three-year-old which is a good sign for further ageing potential." 94pts | Jeni Port | Wine Pilot
"Henschke’s Keyneton Euphonium 2023 is a blend of shiraz (65%), cabernet sauvignon (33%) and cabernet franc (2%), grown in the Barossa and Eden valleys. This wine was made by Henschke winemaker Gwyn Olsen who is, just quietly, doing terrific things with the Henschke range of wines. This release is a monty for the cellar. It’s so fluid, so charming, so inherently complex and ultimately so well sustained. Its bay leaf notes are threaded seamlessly through blackcurrant and boysenberry; its grass and tobacco-like notes are at one with integrated cedarwood oak. There’s a juicy, leafy levity to this wine but also a dark seriousness. It’s a Claret-style in the best sense of the words." 94pts | Campbell Mattinson
Organic & Biodynamic Practices
In June 2021 Henachke was awarded a Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, which recognises 24 wineries from around the world that have demonstrated extraordinary efforts in the pursuit of environmentally friendly practices. To qualify for this award, a producer may or may not already be organic and/or biodynamic certified, however needs to be an outstanding proponent of sustainability who looks towards long-term environmental protection and biodiversity.
