Hot off the press!

Leading Melbourne wine distributor Joval (via the Mezzanine and Red & White portfolios) held an invitation-only tasting covering 60 of their leading wines from Australia and New Zealand. Needless to say the average rating was high and indeed I rated very wines below 'very good'. Turns out reputation counts!

We've hand picked a half dozen pack to highlight our 6 favourite wines. We've not made  consideration to price, as you will see, rather just selected wines that stood out on the day. Quoted retail price is what you could reasonably expect to find in the broader market.

Domenica Rose 2025 (Beechworth) $33

Obstensibly dry, reflecting its Nebbiolo base, but the palate thickens late with a Provence-like feel.

Shaw & Smith 'Aged Release Chardonnay 2017 (Adelaide Hills) $78

Wine of the tasting. Absolutely flying at 9 years of age. One of the best examples of older Chardonnay I have ever tried.

Moss Wood 'Ribbon Vale Elsa' Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (Margaret River) $70

Domestically produced high grade Savvy B is as rare as hens teeth but this one fits the bill (& so it should at $70). Fresh, low fruited, bucket-loads of minerals driving genuine complexity. Young.

MMAD Grenache 2024 (McLaren Vale) $68

Showed miles better than the my previous tasting from 8 months ago. Calm, medium weight, mild savoury notes. Very balanced and linerar.

Felton Road 'Calvert' Pinot Noir 2024 (Central Otago) $82

Very attractive now. Plenty of regionally-typical black cherry fruits but shows enough structure for confidence medium-term cellaring.

Shaw & Smith 'Balhannah Vineyard' Shiraz 2023 (Adelaide Hills) $90

I was compelled to slip a second S&S into this offer. Richly fruited both for the region and the collish 2023 vintage. Drinking superbly now and guaranteed to make an impact at the dinner table.
