“For each year’s edition of my Australian Wine Companion, I list 10 of the best wineries making an appearance for the first time, and choose one as the best of the best. Last year Ministry of Clouds was one of the 10; what the proprietors Julian Forwood and Bernice Ong did not know (and won’t until they read this) was that they came within a hair’s breadth of being nominated the best. And what I did not know was that they would be able to produce an array of new wines this year every bit as good as those from their first year.” James Halliday

Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of ‘golden joinery’, the creation of enduring beauty from broken fragments of ancient pottery as they are pieced together with lacquer laced with gold. It befits a desire to meticulously blend only the very best parcels of old vine fruit from a single year. Kintsugi is thus the best Southern Rhone inspired wine that Bernice and Julian can create each year, no matter its components.

"Yet another excellent wine made by Ministry of Clouds in what was a challenging year. Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art repairing broken pottery using a glue of gold-laced lacquer. Ministry explains the process as a case where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, here blending grenache, mataro, shiraz and carignan. It's light- to medium-bodied, but fragrant and juicy." 94pts - James Halliday - Wine Companion
