There are few tales as impressive as that of Lethbridge Wines. Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis were both successful medical researchers before succumbing to their desire to create a vineyard and winery in Geelong. They planted vines on their own rootstocks, built a straw-bale winery and house, and farmed the land according to biodynamic beliefs. Their wines are powerful, structured, pure and long-lived.

Ray and Maree wanted to farm organically from day one for fruit that fit the precise profile they had in their mind’s eye: pure, potent, layered wines with driving freshness and the stamp of provenance. The lofty, breezy, cool, dry, rocky Lethbridge site had it all. The Lethbridge vineyard—sitting at 270 metres elevation and located 30 kilometres northwest of Geelong—is the Valley’s coolest site. The thin black-clay topsoils lie over two tongues of ancient lava flows—bluestone and honeycomb basalt—formed by volcanic activity 30-50,000 years ago. These volcanic layers lie over a limestone base, resulting in low yields that ripen slowly and thoroughly, and retain freshness despite the Moorabool’s dry climate.

The Lethbridge Rieslings are some of Australia's best examples of residual sugar styles, and Ray’s touch for balanced power is on full display here. It bolts from the glass with aromas of confit lemon, salt, herbs and stones and slides through the palate with mouthwatering energy, punchy structure and pure, delicious flavour.

"Matured in older foudre. A very bright green gold. A slightly different but superb rendition of Henty Riesling. A penetrating nose with its core of citrus fruits, floral notes and crushed rock. There's a hint of sweetness, but this is essentially a dry wine, with mouth-tingling and invigorating acidity ensuring it's balanced and fresh. I liked this. A lot." 97pts | Philip Rich | Halliday Wine Companion
