Watervale Gardeners is a new project from third-generation Clare Valley vignerons Sam and Tom Barry. In 2019, the brothers acquired a historic vineyard they’d long admired—home to dry-grown Grenache planted in 1938 and 1954—and uncovered a rich history of “gardeners” who once tended the land. Rather than fold the site into existing labels, they honoured its individuality with a standalone range. Each wine is single-vineyard and shaped by the depth only mature vines provide. The Riesling captures Clare’s hallmark purity and drive; the Shiraz brings balance and old-school charm; and the Grenache, a regional rarity, is refined and energetic.

"Vibrant, perfumed and high-toned red fruit such as dried strawberries, wild raspberries and blood oranges as well as rose petals, ferric earth and violets. The midweight palate has finely framed tannins and a focused acidity that gives a mineral edged, juicy and mouthwatering finish. Great depth and complexity from vines planted in 1938. The first release of this wine held back four years in bottle." 96pts | Ryan Montgomery | jamessuckling.com
