Following four finals appearances, two Winemakers’ Choice awards, and winning the top prize, it seems Michael Downer may be one of the most lauded producers by the Young Gun of Wine Awards

While Murdoch Hill is rightly lauded for the quality of its Chardonnays, this is a wine to remind us that the reds are not here to make up the numbers. This is packed with bright aromatics and bunchy freshness. Crunchy red fruits and warm earth envelop the palate, while the oak—apparent but not overpowering—provides spicy lift. Backed up by impressive tannin tension and energetic acidity, it’s an irresistible and cultured Pinot Noir from a vintage that’s not short on flavour and freshness.

“Brown spice, gentle reduction, and red cherry define the opening aromas, making way for cranberry, subtle cedar, forest floor, a whisper of paper bark, and subtle black tea. Elegant and poised. The palate has great texture with notes matching the nose and a cooling feel. Lovely fine chalky tannins constrict the mouth along with bright acidity, making for a long and clean finish. Beautiful restraint and elegance to this wine which will only unfurl to reveal more of itself over time.” 93pts | Tom Kline | Inside Burgundy
